Arabic hadith text

عَن عَلِيٍّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ رَضيَ اللهُ عنه قَالَ:

عَن عَلِيٍّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ رَضيَ اللهُ عنه قَالَ: أَخَذَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ حَرِيرًا بِشِمَالِهِ، وَذَهَبًا بِيَمِينِهِ، ثُمَّ رَفَعَ بِهِمَا يَدَيْهِ، فَقَالَ: «إِنَّ هَذَيْنِ حَرَامٌ عَلَى ذُكُورِ أُمَّتِي، حِلٌّ لِإِنَاثِهِمْ».

English translation

‘Ali ibn Abi Tālib (may Allah be pleased with him) reported:

‘Ali ibn Abi Tālib (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) took silk in his right hand and gold in his left hand and then lifted them with his hands and said: "Theseits women."

Explanation

Explanation of the hadith

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) took a silk garment or a piece of it in his left hand and took gold, jewelry or something similar, in his right hand. Then, he said: Silk and gold are forbidden for men to wear. As for women, they are permissible for them.

Benefits from the hadith

  1. As-Sindi said: 'Forbidden' refers to its use as a garment. Otherwise, it is permissible for everyone to use it in terms of disposal, spending, and selling. Moreover, it is forbidden for everyone to make utensils of gold and use them.
  2. The Islamic Shariah provides broad space for women due to their need for adornment and the like.
